Watch the astonishing transformation of the Dionyssos Marble Quarry

Twelve of the world's best Freestyle Motocross riders were in awe when they got their first glimpse of the Red Bull X-Fighters track in Athens – a breathtaking course set up over three levels in a marble quarry.

The stars of the world's most prestigious FMX series were certainly feeling humble after their first look at the amazing track set up as a Greek amphitheater in the Dionyssos Marble Quarry for Friday's second leg of the five-stop 2015 Red Bull X-Fighters World Tour.

"It's pretty amazing," said defending World Tour champion Josh Sheehan of Australia of the Athens track set up in the white marble quarry. "We've never had a competition on such massive steps with the different levels on those quarries. It's a pretty unique location and a bigger track is fun. It'll be tough to blend all those jumps in there. Everyone will have a different approach."

The track, which took three weeks to build over three quarry levels of up to seven meters high, will be one of the most spectacular courses ever with a vast number of possibilities for the riders to find different lines. The Athens track features a record-setting three Kickers, three Super Kickers, two Dirt Jumps and three Quarter Pipes. Some 12,500 cubic meters of earth were moved to build the track deep inside the quarry, which is 350 meters, by 230 meters wide and 80 meters deep.

David Rinaldo of France said he was looking forward to trying out his new flips on the imposing Athens track. „The track is super special," he said. "It looks awesome. I can't wait until the first practice runs on it."
Indeed many of the riders prefer the wide-open tracks compared to the tight, compact tracks – such as the next event in Madrid or the season-opener in Mexico City. But there are others who are inspired to be more creative in colossal venues like here in Athens.
"I've been walking around the track and look at it," said Clinton Moore of Australia, who won the season opener in Mexico City. "There are some lines that looked good on paper but now looking at the track I'm not sure if it's gonna work. My goal is to do a solid and smooth run."

The site of the quarry is in the same region that produced the famous white marble used to build the Acropolis. Operating since the Golden Age of Pericles, the quarries have provided thousands of cubic meters of marble used for most of the Classical, Hellenistic and Roman Sculptures in Greece.
