Monumental X-Fighters At Monumento

Erick Ruiz - 2014 Mexico City Warm-Up
Ruiz And Villegas Warm Up In The City

With the 2014 season opener of the world's most prestigious freestyle motocross event series only days away, two riders from the elite field of 12 warmed up their gravity-defying tricks at Mexico City's majestic Monumento a la Revolución.

As Mexico's capital welcomes the Red Bull X-Fighters World Tour for the eighth time, the freestyle motocross riders are so eager to start the new season that two of them, Mexico City's own Erick Ruiz and Chile's Javier Villegas, got a jump on the action – literally – by launching massive airs in front of a spectacular Art Deco monument.

The Monumento a la Revolución, an iconic copper-domed landmark, was an inspiration for the riders as they prepared for the competition at the Monumental Plaza de Toros on 14 March, where the energy will be off the charts with attendance that, as always, will fill the massive tiered bull ring to capacity.

Hometown hero Ruiz, a prodigy in the sport at age 18, and the veteran Villegas threw down backflips, "cliffhangers" and other breathtaking tricks on their specially modified motos to the surprise of gaping commuters.

The real test will come on Friday when they pull out their most phenomenal maneuvers in the insane competition at the Monumental, where the select field including defending champion Thomas Pagès of France will fly up to 15 meters high and 30 meters in distance. In this outstanding lineup, there's no sure thing – the series has had four different World Champions in the last four years, and everyone will be looking to get an early edge in the points standings.

Red Bull X-Fighters World Tour 2014: 14.3. Mexico City (Mexico) 25.5. Osaka (Japan), 27.6. Madrid (Spain) 19.7. Munich (Germany) 23.8. Pretoria (South Africa)
