Spanish aces Dany Torres and Maikel Melero warmed up for Friday's Red Bull X-Fighters extravaganza in Madrid at 10:15 p.m. with a series of gravity-defying tricks on the Route of Don Quixote in Campo de Criptana. Torres, the 2011 champion who is in third place in a gripping title battle this year, and his compatriot Melero did flips and tricks off their bikes in front of the world-famous windmills 160 km south of the Las Ventas bullring in Madrid.
It is believed that Spain's 17th century novelist Miguel de Cervantes drew inspiration from the windmills of Campo de Criptana for the adventure at the beginning of a chapter in his magnum opus 'Don Quixote'.
Torres is always on top of his game in Madrid, winning twice in 2009 and 2011, and was a close second in 2012 to Levi Sherwood. Torres won in Dubai this season, the top favorite to beat is World Tour leader Tom Pages of France. Melero has also had his career best performances in front of the frenzied home crowd in Madrid, taking third in 2012.
Madrid, the only stop Red Bull X-Fighters in Europe during this year's six-event championship, is the biggest Freestyle Motocross event in the world and this year will mark the 12th consecutive year. The event is sold out and the bullring of Las Ventas will be filled with 23,000 spectators.
