Frenchman Thomas Pagès was an irresistible force in Qualifying at the Red Bull X-Fighters in Munich and took pole position with an unbeatable bag of tricks.
Thomas Pagès kept his hot streak going with a superb performance in the Red Bull X-Fighters Qualifying tonight, clinching the top spot ahead of the fourth stop of the season on Saturday with 86.80 points. The flying Frenchman, who won the third round in Madrid last month, was flawless with his gravity-defying tricks on the 450-meter long linear track set up for the first time ever on a lake next to Munich's Olympic stadium. The defending champion is closing in on 2014 World Tour leader Levi Sherwood (NZL), who took second in the qualifying with 86.30 points under brilliant blue skies in Munich with Josh Sheehan (AUS) third with 86.20 points after pulling off a breathtaking Double Backflip. "It was a great run but I was a bit scared (of the water) and really stressed," said Pagès, who got off to a slow start this season with fifth place in Mexico City and ninth place in Osaka, Japan before the win in Madrid lifted him from seventh place overall to third in the 2014 World Tour standings with 145 points. Pagès, who was crowned champion in Munich two years ago, is clearly on a roll and looking to win the 100 points up for grabs for first place in Munich to narrow Sherwood's 65-point lead at the top before the season finale in Pretoria, South Africa in August.
Pagès set the stage for a sporting festival on Saturday in Germany, which is still celebrating its World Cup soccer victory last week, and nailed all of his trademark tricks on the unique track set up on the Olympic Park lake: the Bike Flip, the 540-Flair, the Special Flip, the 360 and the Volt on the first of his two Qualifying runs. He thencoasted through the second run and even found a moment to wave tauntingly to Sherwood, who was waiting on the side to start his run later, from the apogee of one jump. Sheehan, who had an epic battle in the finals in Madrid against Pagès, successfully completed a Double Backflip in Qualifying. "I know the trick works really well now and that's great," he said. "It was very stressful thinking about it. It changes the whole game for me knowing that I'm able to do a Double Backflip."
