First Dirt in Pretoria
Date: 13/08/2015

The first grain of sand was delivered today to the Union Buildings in Pretoria. With a month to go before stop four of the Red Bull X-Fighters World Tour the first of some 400 truck loads rolled in.

To create the 11 000 square meter Red Bull X-Fighters track at the century-old Government buildings of South Africa's capital city will take some 8000 cubic meters of classic red African soil. The soil has a particularly high clay content, which – by adding the right amount of water – compacts during the build to create a dust free surface that offers good traction for the motorbikes.

"Once the track-build team gets here, they move an enormous amount of dirt," explains Coenraad Nolte, who heads up logistics and planning for the event in South Africa. "What we need to do, is stockpile dirt," he says. "We bring in one truck at time, at 18-tonnes per truck. The first loads were delivered today."

Nolte's team will constantly run trucks until event day and then be removing for two weeks after. "Today is the first day of the 40 we are on site for," says Nolte, adding that the trucks have to join normal traffic flow into the center of Pretoria which means the return trip to the quarry – which is situated some 30 kilometers East of the venue – takes roughly three hours. "We start at 7am and try to do 21 truck loads a day. We have about two weeks to get ahead of the game," says Nolte.

Next week we check in on the construction of the biggest temporary grandstand in South Africa. "This site is quite big," says Nolte, "but once all the dirt and the but once all the dirt and all the structures come in it becomes pretty small, pretty quickly."
